Malware can be a serious problem for PC users. Several vendors have the answer, and most of the best tools are free.

Even the most cautious computer user can be affected by malware and malicious software. It can be very disruptive to have to deal with popups, slow systems, and security risks that come from spyware; so it is best to have preventative measures in place before it becomes a major problem.

Here are some free spyware removers that help to prevent and remove malware from PC’s.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Spybot Search and Destroy, from Safer Networking, is a free spyware detector that offers realtime protection. The program allows the user to immunize their browser against certain threats before they become an issue. The immunization feature works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera and is effective at blocking common spyware.

Users can also enable the Resident Shield which blocks sneaky malware downloads; and a TeaTimer which monitors system processes for malware and other malicious files.

Sypbot Search and Destroy also has a scanning feature that scans the entire computer system. Users should download updates on a weekly basis to ensure they have the latest protection.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender is a free Microsoft product that protects against a variety of security issues. It comes with Windows Vista, and can be downloaded to systems that have Microsoft XP or Windows Server 2003.

In addition to scans that detect spyware, popups, Trojans, and other malicious files; Windows Defender offers real time protection that will alert the user if there is a spyware problem. This protection feature is optional.

Windows Defender contains a scheduler in which users can select a time of day for automatic scanning. Users can continue working while the scan is taking place or it can be scheduled for a time when it is unlikely that anyone would be accessing the computer. Users should scan with Windows Defender on a daily basis and update when required. Update notifications appear on the users desktop.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Malewarebytes is a powerful program that detects a wide variety of malicious files. If users only decide to install one anti-malware program, this should be it as it detects issues that other programs tend to overlook.

Though the basic program is free, the paid version unlocks additional features including real time protection, scheduled scanning, and scheduled updating.

Users who choose not to upgrade will still have access to the programs core features; they will just have to update and scan manually.

Malwarebytes releases several updates per day so users should always check for updates before conducting a full scan. Free users should remind themselves to conduct a full system scan on a weekly basis. Paid version users should schedule scans and updates.

For the best malware prevention, do not open any unfamiliar emails as trojans can be embedded within the email. Also, avoid clicking on strange links and downloading attachments from unreliable sources. Malware scans should be conducted regularly using different programs as each program has strengths and weaknesses.

Users can sometimes experience issues if there are too many antivirus and computer security programs running. Fortunately, the ones listed do not have any computability problems so they can all run on the same system as long as the scans are not run at the same time.
