How to Be a Day Job Killer

A Guide to Staying Stay Self Employed

Self employment can be risky. Here is how to avoid having to go back to the office.

Being self employed may seem easy, but staying that way can present a challenge. Self employed individuals may find it rewarding to be able to spend the day doing what they love, but following a passion alone will not sustain a lifestyle of self employment.

Some workers find that after awhile they have to head back to the office. This can feel like the ultimate defeat for a former day job killer. However, by following a few simple steps, one can feel confident that he or she will not have to go back to working a job.

Have a Business Plan

Business plans are often overlooked by self employed people. Some tend to be so passionate about their work that they fail to look at the logistics. No matter what type of work someone is engaged in, they must have a plan. Having a plan not only includes outlining the basic purpose of the business or service, but it also involves evaluating how much cash flow is needed, advertising and marketing strategies, estimated revenue, and expected growth.

Solopreneurs may feel that business plans are only needed if one wants to obtain financing, but in fact every business, no matter how big or small, should have some type of plan in writing.

Have a Schedule

Not staying productive is a sure fire way to ensure that someone will have to head back to the office. Being self employed requires a high level of productivity and discipline. Maintaining productivity can be a challenge, but by having a schedule some of those challenges can be eliminated. Any good schedule starts with having a list of tasks that need to be completed. By maintaining this list, one can ensure that they won’t spend their days wasting time.

Have a Contingency Plan

Sometimes plans don’t work out and the unexpected occurs. In order to stay self employed, one needs to plan for the worst. This does not mean that one should have a negative attitude or a lack of confidence; it just means that a business should be diversified.

Every person should have a back up plan in case something happens and they can’t generate enough income. For example, a contingency plan might include offering multiple services if business becomes slow. Or it might include a hefty savings plan to be used for emergency purposes only.

Review Progress

Progress should be reviewed on a regular basis. This helps anticipate any future problems so that they can be avoided. If one lets problems sneak up on them, then they may not be able to recover, and they may have to head back to the office.

Staying self employed is not something that is only for the lucky or the wealthy. With proper planning anyone can ensure that they live a successfully self employed lifestyle.
